Valentine's Day Card Exchange

To celebrate Valentine's Day, we first decorated a bag for our Valentine cards and goodies. We drew on and colored them. We put stickers and used rubber stamps as well. Then, Mrs. Garcia came and did some face painting for us all. Next, we passed out cards and treats to each other. Lastly, we thanked one another, ate a cookie, and mini cupcake as we walked out the door. We had a lot of fun!

Sweet Project

We made marshmallow lollipops today! First, we wrote our name on the label that was on our lollipop bag. Second, we moistened one end of our jumbo marshmallows by dipping it on a wet paper towel. Third, we dipped our marshmallows in some sprinkles. After we dipped all of our marshmallows, we "glued" them together. We put marshmallow spread on their sides so that they stick to each other. Last, we put a lollipop stick through some of the marshmallows so that we have a handle. Our teacher and Room Moms helped us put it all in a clear bag and tied it up. We had a lot of fun! Thank you Mrs. Tse and Mrs. Hamet for doing a sweet project with us!

Starlab at Delevan

Our teacher borrowed the Starlab from LAUSD's Division of Science. Our PTA Treasurer helped her set it up, thank you Mr. Hamet.
Once the Starlab was set up, we crawled inside. It was dark inside but our teacher had a flashlight to guide us to our seat. Inside was a projector. It projected the stars and the different phases of the moon. The projector also projected the constellations that zodiac symbols are named after.
We will try to learn the stories behind each zodiac symbol. We can share these stories in third grade, when we get to the theme Telling Stories.

Delevan Drive's 4th Annual Try-A-Thon

Our 4th Annual Try-A-Thon was Friday, February 4, 2011. This fund raiser is to provide us an extra field trip. All of the proceeds will go our school.
Our first activity was basketball. We practiced dribbling and shooting lay-ups and free throws. Our coaches were Mr. & Mrs. Tse and Mr. & Mrs. Qua. Our second activity was calisthenics. We stretched, did sit-ups and went through the monkey bars. Our coach was Mr. Hamet. Our final activity was yoga. We cooled down, we took deep breaths and stretched. We tried to calm down, balance, and practiced being still like a tree. We curved our back like a cat. We made a v-formation, and we let out our "Lion" through our breath. Our coach was Mrs. Sood-Mankar. THANK YOU COACHES for your time, talent, and dedication!

Holiday Fun

Our Holiday Fun began on December 16 with our angelic performance of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing". We were in line getting ready to sing for our parents, who were patiently waiting in a very crowded auditorium. It was so crowded that our teacher did not get to take the group picture she wanted. Our fun continued the next day with a classroom visit from Santa. We sang a song with him then he gave each one of us a candy cane. Santa was on a very tight schedule and we couldn't take individual photos with him; we took a group photo instead. Afterwards, we went to a dance party in the auditorium. Despite his busy schedule, Santa stopped by to dance with us for a short while. When our dance time was up, we went outside to have some hot cocoa and graham crakers. After our snack, we went back to our classroom and passed out treats to our friends. We had a lot of fun and thank you PTA for your hard work!

We use the mouse to help Jiji cross a path. We solve different math activities. These activities help us do our math in our classroom.

There are a lot of levels. We need to complete all of them by the end of the school year.

Speaking with a Park Interpreter by Videoconference

We had an exciting time on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 going into Room D with other First Grade students. That was because we were treated to a virtual field trip to one of our California beaches, Crystal Cove State Park. Through the generosity of Los Angeles Unified School District Educational Technology, we were able to check-out equipment to connect by videoconference with a park interpreter at the beach. This was part of the California State Parks PORTS Program, and the unit of study we focused on was on tidepools.

We were treated to a look at some tidepool creatures that call Crystal Cove State Park their home. Some of us connected before with the state park when we were in kindergarten (see: Videoconference with California State Parks), but many of us had not because we came from different kindergarten classes. This time, though, we learned more about how the plants and animals live and depend on the tidepool habitat.

This more than made up for having our Los Angeles Zoo field trip on November 26, 2008 cancelled because of rain.

Jumping with the Jump Rope Master

On November 10, 2008, the day before we would stay home to observe Veterans Day, we were visited by the Jump Rope Masters and watched 7-Time World Champion Peter Nestler perform some great jump roping. We were even able to see him jump with glow ropes, which he used to create some neat designs as he used them for jump roping. Everyone in our school gathered in the school multi-purpose room in order to see the effects of the lights in his jump ropes.

Even though there were so many students watching, some of us from Room C were picked to jump with him. We really enjoyed watching each other jump.
